Occupational Therapist

The occupational therapist focuses on the evaluation and improvement of physical, cognitive, and perceptual skills that affect the patient’s ability to perform functional tasks, often referred to as activities of daily living (ADLs).

ADLs include self-care skills such as dressing, grooming, bathing, toileting, and preparing a meal; independent living skills such as money management; and community living skills such as the use of public transportation. The occupational therapist also assesses the patient’s need for adaptive equipment (e.g. tub chair, raised toilet seat, etc.) and will issue upper extremity splints as needed.

The unit offers a fully equipped and stocked ADL apartment to best recreate the home experience. Several of the occupational therapists are certified brain injury specialists (ACBIS) with significant knowledge and experience in management and treatment of the patient following a brain injury. Technologies such as the Nintendo Wii are often incorporated to work on balance, cognition, and reaction times.
